What are the Gateway programs?
The Gateway programs develop independent living skills for adults with intellectual disabilities.
Who are Gateway programs for?
Gateway offers services for Adults with Intellectual Disabilities (ID). About 30 people, ranging from 18 years to 60 plus years, access services at each of the Gateway Programs. Though the primary disability of the majority of service users is intellectual, a number of service users have a secondary disability, which is often physical. People with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) also attend Gateway services.
What services do Gateway programs provide?
A number of programs operate from the Kew, Mount Waverley and Wantirna sites. A large number of the current programs also operate off-site. All Gateway Programs focus on developing an individual sense of empowerment, communication skills and outcomes, choice making opportunities and outcomes, social skills, and an interest in participation.
Programs are developed to reflect feedback given in annual surveys including personal goals, specific areas of need for support and skill development, areas of interest, and satisfaction with the service and suggestions for improvement. Service performance is also devised in line with the Victorian Standards for Disability Services. Current programs are:
- Independent Living Skills;
- Pre-Vocational Training;
- An Older Person's Program;
- Recreation and Leisure Options;
- Sensory Awareness;
- Relaxation and Massage;
- Music and Dance; and
- Arts and Crafts.
How can I access the Gateway programs?
All people who attend Gateway Adult Day Service must be registered with the Department of Human Services (DHS) - Disability Client Services or receive funding through the Transport Accident Commission (TAC).
Contact the DHS - Eastern Region on (03) 9843 6000 for referral information.
Annual funding for placements is provided by DHS based on needs assessments completed by DHS staff.
Where are Gateway programs located?
Gateway Programs are currently located at Kew, 13 Fernhurst Grove, Mount Waverley, 535-537 High Street Road and Wantirna, 355 Stud Road. Parking is available on site. The Programs are also accessible by public transport. Gateway Wantirna does not offer transport to and from the service.
All services have vehicles for program use. Transport during program times includes Gateway vans and cars, public transport and walking.
What will it cost me?
Villa Maria charges an Annual Attendance Fee of $1000, invoiced at $250 per quarter. People using transport to and from the service also contribute a mobility fee.
Gateway Adult Day Service charges for program costs on a weekly basis. These costs are calculated on an individual basis for programs that have a cost attached, such as cooking and programs that utilise external tutors or facilities. Program costs are calculated for the term and are required at the beginning of each week. Unspent money is returned or may be used for an extra activity by negotiation with the relevant individuals.
How are the Gateways programs funded?
The Gateways programs are funded in various ways:
- Victorian Department of Human Service - Disability Services;
- Client fees; and
- Donations.
In addition to client fees, funding also comes from the Victorian Department of Human Services - Home and Community Care Program, National Respite for Carers Program as well as donations from the community.
