Villa Maria is building Victoria’s first purpose-specific residence for 10 young people with high level, complex care needs (all with Acquired Brain Injury), who are currently living in aged care nursing homes. Today, there are around 6,500 younger people living in nursing homes; an environment not suited to their specific needs or circumstances. And while Austin Street can only provide support for 10 of these young people, it will mark the beginning of a new era; a new care model that will blend nursing care with rehabilitation and community inclusion.
Progress at Austin Street, Alphington has been steady. We are delighted to advise that Jenni Williams has been appointed as the Manager of Austin Street. Jenni brings with her many years of health care experience in acute, sub-acute and community settings including indigenous community health, aged care, mental health and rehabilitation. Recruitment is underway for nurses (Div 1 & 2), Disability Support Workers and Allied Health specialists to join the Austin Street team.
An upbeat Angela Roennfeldt, Villa Maria Design Manager, Projects & Development, says: “Austin Street is progressing well and the building is now secure. The external weatherboards are being installed and the verandahs should be in place in the next couple of weeks. Excavation for the remaining rock for the water and other underground tanks has commenced and when complete, the concreting for the driveway, car parking and paving can commence.”
“Internally, the painting is under way and the timber-look vinyl flooring is being installed in the private spaces. The kitchenettes are also being installed and they will be followed by the wardrobe doors. The accommodation has plenty of light with views from most areas to landscaped and external areas.”
The Austin Street project has received funding from governments, philanthropic organisations and Villa Maria itself. However, we still need funds to complete the project.
We welcome donations for this initiative which will make a tremendous difference to the lives of these young people and their families. To donate, freecall: 1800 036 377 or visit: www.villamaria.com.au.
