Villa Maria Hume Community Services has recently set up a new Singing Circle in the Wangaratta area aimed at carers who like to sing.
Caring is a role that many Australians undertake. Carers are usually family members or friends who provide support to children or adults with a disability, mental illness, chronic condition or who are frail aged. Carers come from different walks of life, cultures and age groups.
Villa Maria runs the Commonwealth Carer Respite and Carelink Centre that offers short term assistance, information and support for carers in the community.
“Carers often put their own needs last,” says Sarah Weijers, Villa Maria Community Engagement and Liaison Worker. “There is help and support out there for them and social connection too, with others in a similar situation.”
“The Singing Circle regularly unites carers in the local area and provides a non-threatening forum in which to experience the joy of singing.”
“You get to sing with not to others. No skills or experience is necessary and all ages are welcome.”
Singing Circle sessions are led by trained and experienced local singing leaders, Pauline Daniel and Carol Kunert.
The Singing Circle assists carers with healing and expression, develops empowerment, creates meaningful relationships and a sense of community, as well as offers an alternative form of respite.
The Singing Circle meets each alternate Thursday between 11:30am and 1:30pm at the Villa Maria office, 27-29 Faithfull Street, Wangaratta.
