Construction of Villa Maria’s innovative Austin Street project is now complete. Building works at the Alphington residence finished last month and the young people who will call it home are expected to move in across late June and early July.
Austin Street will be Victoria’s first purpose-specific residence for young people, who have an Acquired Brain Injury resulting in high and complex medical and physical support needs, who are currently living in aged care nursing homes.
An enormous amount of work has been done to get the project to this point, following Villa Maria’s successful tendering for government funding under the ‘my future my choice’ initiative in 2007.
To undertake construction, Villa Maria contributed $3.75 million to the project (including the site valued at $1.85 million).
A further $1.3 million was provided by the Department of Human Services and over $740,000 has been raised to date, through philanthropic trusts and community donations.
The enthusiastic and dedicated people who will staff Austin Street have been busy training for their new roles.
As part of their three-week induction, the 22-member group took part in a team-building, equine therapy day in Monbulk on May 21.
Learning and Development consultant Michelle Jennings said the staff group learned how to further develop their skills around non-verbal means of communication with the horses, such as touch.
An official opening of the home will be held in August.
We welcome donations for this initiative which will make a tremendous difference to the lives of these young people and their families. To donate, freecall: 1800 036 377 or visit: www.villamaria.com.au.
