Help children with disabilities and their families have access to an unfunded “lifesaving” service.

Three days per week, Anthony, who has developmental disorder Smith–Magenis Syndrome, joins 15 other students, including Tayla, who are picked up from Attwood in the North, to Nunawading in the East, and Yarraville in the West. The school buses make 74 pickups and drop offs each week; a huge help to parents who are unable to transport their children to school.

The Department of Education provides free student transport to their specialist schools, but as St Paul’s College is classified as an independent Catholic school, it does not receive financial assistance.

As such, Villa Maria must cover the cost of the bus runs. At around $200,000 per annum, this is a massive drain on the organisation’s resources, significantly impacting upon our ability to fund other vital senior, disability and education services.

With each new school year, the pressure to maintain the bus runs increases.  Presently, just 35 per cent of students can be accommodated on the buses, which means too many families are missing out.

How can you help?

By making a donation to our 2011 Christmas Appeal or becoming a regular bus-run donor, you will see a true and tangible outcome for students at St Paul’s, their families and teachers.  For example, an ongoing donation of $50 to $200 per term would help contribute to the $3,125 it costs to secure a child’s seat on the bus for a whole school term.  Or a single donation would mean a student was able to attend a weekly horse riding or sailing lesson.

Importantly, your support, however big or small, will mean Villa Maria can re-channel its already stretched funds towards other vital services and programs for older people, children and adults with a disability, their families and carers.

In 2012, Villa Maria will mark its 55th year of providing quality education to children with a disability.  Let’s work together to ensure we can continue to offer real choice, inclusion and support for the students and their families in the years ahead.  Your support is vital.
